"Wonderful how they're spending $10M for an assembly hall here in the US while at the same time begging for donations because of the supposed enormous need for halls in Africa and other countries. drwtsn32" IMHO WT uses the cry of enourmous need in Africa as a ploy to pull generous heart/purse strings. In 1997, when our local KH was debating the need to remodel, several of us suggested a scaled down, economic version of the remodel plans suggested by the regional building committee (many in the local area were unemployed, single moms, or widowed). We presented the information from the OKM (at that time there was an article requesting donations for WW building fund for Zimbabwe). One elder's wife told us we were the most selfish people she had ever known, that the brothers in Zimbabwe were used to sitting on boxes on the dirt. We called HQ in Brooklyn to see if we could send our contribution directly to the brothers in Africa (or other place that was in dire straights) and were told that we could not do that. The contribution had to be made directly to the WW building fund c/o the local hall or through Brooklyn. This was the big turning point for us to make an exit from associating with all things WT.

The last taj-ma-Hall completed in Fairfield California
by ezekiel3 inthe last great taj-ma-"hall" (as commonly referred to by joho member volunteer workers), the fairfield ca assembly hall has been completed after a year of construction and will hold its first assembly this month.
it features a marble-faced stage and columns, 2200+ seated capacity, flatscreen monitors for baptismal viewing, two kingdom halls and an apartment for travelling overseers.
no doubt northern california will a "seniority" stop for circuit and district overseers.

Jehovah's Witness Accidentally Eats Candy Cane

Don't understand the logic, but yes, if the holiday is past and the candy/food item is discounted (75% is a real good bargain!), holiday food items are no longer forbidden fruit. My brother-in-law just bought some Peeps , which are only on the market here shortly before Easter and offered at discount prices for a short time after Easter (i don't like marshmallows - peeps are just sugar coated, food dyed marshmallows).

What's your ethnic background?

it seems that light skinned ex-ws speak out more against watchtower than people of a darker skin color.
what is your ethnic origin?

santacruzchick:
I can relate to the discrimination thing. We don't live far from the Res', actually three tribal nations live close by. I am stopped by highway patrol and county cops fairly regularly (although less so now that the same cops have been around for quite a while and know who I am). On one occasion I was driving the company car home from the airport rather late one night, had to drive through town as I live a few miles outside of town in the opposite direction of the airport. The county cop had someone pulled over in town when I went through. He caught up to me about 4 miles out of town, just as I was slowing down to pick up my mail. He had to have gone 100 to catch up to me so quickly. I wasn't speeding, he just wanted to tell me I had a light out (hmmm, maybe, or maybe not). Another time I was driving a car with a cracked windshield. I had passed the local police guy for months with this same cracked windshield (not bad enough to impair vision). There was a new deputy on duty and he had to pull me over to check out the windshield! People are always asuming my racial heritage. We have a dreamcatcher hanging on the wall at work...one of our clients asked if I made it! A previous employer was so worried about political correctness that he bent over backwards to say that I had been hired on merit, not on racial quota. So when I say that I am mixed race I really subconsciously feel that I mean 'mixed up' mentally. I don't let these subtle discriminations get me down. It would be very easy to have a chip on my shoulder. Most people don't mean any harm, they just don't know any better. Being mean and nasty to them doesn't make matters better, only worse. So I do a lot of smiling...makes them wonder!

I seem to always get pulled in to discussions about 'politically correct' terminology. Anyway, these days the least offensive term used for non-white people seems to be 'people of color.' Most of the globe is populated with 'people of color.'
As for the ratio of xjws of color posting on the board...there is probably some statistical formula that could be applied, if someone really wanted to get picky. You would have to figure out the ratio of white persons to people of color in the jw population, and then that percentage might be applied to the xjw community that has access to the internet and this discussion forum. But, it has been said that statistics are just another name for lies. Just my 2 cents worth...
I am half Asian, half British Isle mix...I'm not Native American (First Nation to the Canadians) but could very easily play one on TV! Rocky is German and Irish. Our children our Heinz 57!

Rocky started losing his hair at age 19. He is mid-40s now. I made him stop the dreaded comb over right away. He hasn't been brave eough to try the full shaved look. I think he's very sexy, but not just because of his lack of hair. Sexy is in the eye of the beholder!

How many were raised as a JW during their teenage years?
by codeblue in.
and how many of you feel because of that, you never really got to be a "teenager"?

Started attending meetings regularly at age 8. So yes, life as a teenager was restricted to a rather dull existence. There were few young people where I lived. The most difficult thing to overcome is that line about 'not working to my potential.' Because the 'Armageddon's just around the corner' was pounded in to us at every opportunity, I didn't set any personal goals. By golly, I was going to pioneer until the end. So here I am, 40 something, still wondering what I should do when I grow up.

JW Nepotism or "Adams family values"
by Undaunted Danny injehovah's witnesses and nepotism.
in my nearly a half century of exposure to jehovah's witnesses.i have observed that the membership of any given congregation to be composed of about + - 50% blood kin.
isn't this a form of spiritual incest ?

I've thought about this one for years. Had family not been involved with WT, it is doubtful that I would have ever gotten involved. While I was a loyal JW I often wondered why my family got to have the opportunity for salvation, but my mother's family did not. Now that I am out I can look at it objectively and see that it's no different than people born into whatever religion their family has. The insidious part of the JWs is that they are so controlling that you don't look outside the religion of your family like other people do, and so we have 4 generations of JWs.

For those with family in the org...
by kibizzle in...have they justified the un involvement to you by saying that the wts was only getting information for their magazines, that they weren't "aiding" them in their political work, so the involvement was ok?.
imo, there is no justification for the un invovement.
how do you reason with your family when they defend the actions of the wts?

My family is in denial about my departure from associating with all things WT. So they don't discuss or allow to be discussed anything having to do with WT issues. I think they may be afraid they will lose contact with their only grandchildren if they knew we've quit. My dad is very content being PO in his congregation...having a daughter leave the Borg would be too embarrasing. So if he doesn't really know it's better, he can just tell people we are 'slackers.' It helps being several hundred miles away too. My guess is that he would say that 'he just follows orders' if confronted with any of WTs dirty secrets. Sad, no personal conscience.
Rocky's mom is also in denial, and while she listens to the facts we present, she defends WT and says that "Jehovah will take care of it in his time."

Looooong Prayers!
by BigJ inok, who remembers all those long prayers?
especially at the district conventions!.
we had our convetions at a small hockey arena and the stairs were really steep.

I remember a CO poking fun at the long prayers some would make before meals....'bless the temple once, bless the temple twice' and so forth. Seems like some of those long convention prayers were to 'bless the faithful slave once, bless them twice....' Glad I don't have to put up with it anymore! Think I would gag or pass out with all the blessing for something so blasphemous.

nightmares
by in a new york bethel minute ini grew up having nightmares about armageddon, satan and, most of all jehovah.
i am 25 now and i still get nightmares, and they're always about these same things.
i was wondering if my brain is overactive, or if other people on this site get nightmares about things they learned as a witness.

GreenDragon - thank you for the info on sleep paralysis. It's something I have experienced for years but have not known what it was.
When I was still associated with WT I would have frequent, regular sleep paralysis, never really remembering what the content of the dream. These started when I was a teenager. I had a dream that really felt like someone was crushing me. The elders back then went through our house and made me and my roommates get rid of a bunch of stuff they thought might be 'demonizing' us (one of my roomies had to destroy her Earth, Wind, and Fire album!). When I married, the dreams were less frequent. Really freaked out Rocky because I would wake up screaming. He finally figured out I was screaming 'Jehovah.' He usually wakes me up to stop the dream. Last year he started listening carefully to my screams and did not wake me right away. This allowed me to remember more of the dream and has given me an opportunity to sort them out. The dreams are now farther between, although they seem to come in clusters...a few nights in a row, and then none for several months. As far as I know, the dreams are not about Armageddon. One of my recent dreams had a faceless figure cloaked in black, and yes, very malevolent. The day after the dream I'm usually out of sorts, they are so disturbing.
